The wild side of the Highway 1

Driving along the Highway 1 in California is an amazing trip. Its rugged coastline and mountain views are enough reason for making this roadtrip. The landscape is a succession of golden cliffs, turquoise sea waters and lovely hidden coves enhanced by the coming and going of the fog and impressive sunsets, as I showed you in my previous post about Big Sur.

But there is another thing that impressed me while driving in the Highway 1. The amount and diversity of wildlife there is astonishing!!! I saw deer, sea otters, lion seals, elephant seals, harbour seals, squirrels (until my trip to California I thought squirrels only lived in forests… :P), pelicans, falcons, eagles and even the endangered California condor. And, of course, we caught sight of a few whales from the coast. I love landscape photography but I’ve always thought that wildlife is an essential part of every landscape. I really enjoyed finding all this wildlife during this part of the trip.

The photos I show you here were taken during the second day of my trip on the Highway 1. That day I drove from Piedras Blancas State Marine Reserve to Santa Bárbara. Hope you like them!
